THE IMPORTANCE OF BET SIZING

In the WCOOP main event, ElkY demonstrates how choosing the perfect bet size can induce your opponent to react exactly how you want

1. The blinds are at 400/800 and ElkY has a healthy 58,000 chip stack. He picks up A-Q offsuit on the big blind. A very aggressive player by the name of ‘holla@yoboy’ has opened for a standard pre-flop raise of 2,100, with 42,000 behind. The button has also called. ElkY has to decide whether to call or raise.

2. ElkY considers re-raising, but is worried that it could look like a squeeze and does not want to have to fold to a push, so he elects to call and play the flop. It comes A-10;-5;. Knowing how his opponent plays, ElkY believes that he is way ahead of his range and that a check-raise will work best in this situation.

3. ‘holla@yoboy’ bets 4,000, the button folds and ElkY makes a very deliberate bet of 12,000 to induce a semi-bluff all-in from his opponent on the highly textured board. holla@ yoboy obliges and ElkY calls instantly. hollo@yoboy shows K-J offsuit for a gutshot straight draw and ElkY’s hand holds up.
